Restore the door you love – make it work like new.

see how we’ve helped your neighbours IN LONDON.

Before

The customers door was tired and draughty. Paint was damaged in areas.

Door was showing signs of its age.

During

We stripped the door to bear timber. This ensures we get back to its original character. It also removes any paint that may not adhere to the wood. This would cause the new paint to not adhere if not done correctly.

We also installed a full perimeter draught sealing system as well as new locks.

After

On completion the door is now a thing of beauty again.

It looks great, works perfectly and is safer than ever.

Keep the character. Gain performance.

Tired doors let your home down.

Your front door shouldn’t be a source of embarrassment, your heating bills shouldn’t be a source of frustration, and your own home should always be a place where you feel completely safe and secure.

What our satisfied customers say

Painting & Modernisation

“Cold hall, a sticking Victorian door and rattling panes were driving us mad. Pieter explained a simple plan: Paint, draught-seal, fit new locks, and arrange new glass with their partner. The team were careful, on time, and the paint finish is brilliant. Now the door closes with a fingertip, the hall is calmer and feels secure, and the original character is back.”

                                                                                                    Phillip, NW10 (2025)

strip and Finish

“Our oak door had great bones but the old varnish was patchy and orange. The Wooden Door Company recommended staining rather than paint and talked us through the steps. They stripped, sanded, colour-matched and sealed it properly. The grain now looks rich and even, and neighbours keep complimenting it. Exactly what we hoped for, just simpler.”

                                                                                                   Beverley, SE3 (2025)

draught sealing

“Winter draughts, a wobbly latch and a door that scraped the floor — we thought replacement was next. Pieter’s plan was clear: ease and rehang, install a full perimeter brush seal, and fit new locks. In a day the door worked like new. No more gaps, the key turns smoothly, and the whole entrance feels solid again.”

                                                                                                     Michelle , N19 (2025)

Every original door tells a story. By choosing to restore rather than replace, you become a guardian of the architectural character that makes English homes so distinctive.

WHICH DOORS CAN YOU RESTORE?

At The Wooden Door Restoration Specialists, our team brings wide-ranging expertise to every job. That means whatever condition your door is in — whether it’s letting in draughts, showing signs of rot or decay, or simply looking tired with flaking paint and worn fittings — we can restore it. Each project is approached with care, and tailored specifically to your door and your home.

HOW DO YOU RESTORE DOORS?

When you choose The Wooden Door Restoration Specialists, you can be confident that no detail will be overlooked. Every door we restore follows the same meticulous process — each stage carefully completed to ensure your door performs beautifully and looks the part for years to come.

  1. In-situ — We carry out all of our work on-site at your property, so there’s no need to remove your door or disrupt your day more than necessary.
  2. Repairs — Before anything else, we assess your door thoroughly, isolating any areas of damage or weakness and carrying out all essential repairs.
  3. Stripping — If your door is being painted, we take the time to remove all old, flaking paint from the exterior surface by hand. It’s a step many overlook, but it makes all the difference — giving fresh paint a solid, clean foundation to adhere to.
  4. Glazing — From small door lights to large French door panels, glazing has a significant impact on both the look and performance of a door. Where required, we replace inefficient or damaged glass and apply fresh sealing to enhance security and keep the cold out.
  5. Draught-proofing — Our specialist draught-sealing system is fitted carefully around the full perimeter of your door, forming an effective barrier against cold air and draughts — without compromising the smooth operation of the door itself.
  6. Painting — Where painting has been chosen, we complete the restoration with a meticulous hand-painted finish, using only premium quality paints in your chosen colour to give your door the protection and kerb appeal it deserves.

TELL ME ABOUT THE HISTORY OF DOORS IN ENGLAND

Over the years, The Wooden Door Restoration Specialists have had the privilege of working on some of London’s most beautiful and historically significant wooden doors. It’s given us something that goes beyond technical expertise — a genuine love for the craftsmanship, character and architectural storytelling found on doorsteps right across the capital.

London’s streets are a living timeline. Century after century of history has shaped the city we see today, and few things capture that better than its doors. Each era brought with it a distinct set of influences, and those influences are still visible today for those who know where to look.

Georgian: 1714–1837 Some of London’s Georgian doors have been standing for over 300 years — and they were built to do exactly that. Constructed during a period of population recovery and widespread new building following the plague, these doors are characteristically heavy, wide and robust. Their hallmark six-panel design has become one of the most enduring motifs in British architecture. The world’s most famous example — the door at 10 Downing Street — still stands as a symbol of British permanence and authority, its iconic black finish as recognisable today as it has ever been.

Victorian: 1837–1901 The Victorian era transformed the British front door. As manufacturing advances made glass increasingly affordable, glazed panels became a defining feature — beginning with modest single windows and gradually expanding to cover entire upper halves of doors. The revival of stained glass and intricate floral designs during the mid-1800s added a further layer of artistry, and many of these details survive beautifully on London streets to this day. Front doors had long been a statement of status, but under Queen Victoria they became a canvas for self-expression — more decorative and elaborate than anything that had come before, while maintaining the structural panelling inherited from the Georgian age.

Edwardian: 1901–1910 In just under a decade, the Edwardian era managed to establish a character entirely its own. Where the Victorians had embraced ornamentation, the Edwardians pulled back — favouring simplicity, restraint and quiet elegance. Clean panelled designs, quality traditional metalwork and understated colour choices defined the period. In many ways, Edwardian doors paid quiet tribute to their Georgian predecessors, letting craftsmanship speak for itself rather than competing for attention.

Interwar: 1919–1939 The doors of the interwar period tell the story of a nation finding its feet again. The optimism of the 1920s expressed itself in colour — bold, cheerful front doors that brought life and personality to London’s streets. As housebuilding accelerated to meet demand, designs became more varied and in some cases more functional, with traditional features like the Georgian fanlight appearing less frequently. The result is a wonderfully eclectic chapter in London’s door history — diverse in style, spirit and scale.

Modern: 1945–present Wooden doors have weathered the uPVC era with their reputation firmly intact. Where synthetic doors have come and gone — typically requiring full replacement within a few decades — wooden doors have continued to perform, age gracefully and respond beautifully to restoration. Today’s modern wooden doors draw freely from the full breadth of British architectural history, incorporating traditional panelling, heritage glazing, vintage metalwork and timeless colour palettes. They are, in every sense, a continuation of a very long and distinguished story.

WOODEN DOOR REPAIR NOTES

A truly effective door repair doesn’t just address what’s visible — it gets to the heart of the problem. Here’s how we approach every job.

  1. Inspection — We begin with a detailed inspection of your door, taking the time to properly understand what’s gone wrong and why. Identifying the root cause is essential. A crack, for instance, might be a symptom of water ingress rather than a problem in its own right — and treating only the surface would leave the real issue untouched.
  2. Repair — With the cause identified, we carefully isolate the problem area and get to work. Whether it’s a damaged section of frame, a cracked or rotten panel, or a worn door accessory, every repair is carried out with precision and care. Timber work is completed using bespoke hardwood pieces shaped to fit, while replacement components — glass panes, letterboxes, hinges — are selected to complement your door’s existing character.
  3. Finishing touches — The final stage is all about protection and presentation. We treat the repaired area and, where needed, the door as a whole — resealing, painting or refinishing as required. The goal is simple: to leave your door looking beautiful and fully equipped to withstand whatever comes next.
